Ergonomic/Physical Access Impairments
What to Know:
People with physical impairments may or may not use obvious mobility devices, prosthetics or orthotics such as wheelchairs, scooters, splints or other medical supports. Persons with "invisible" physical access limitations may require your ergonomic workstation and may not have evidence of an actual disability. Signage to identify preferential seating for persons with disabilities is important. Be respectful and polite. As with all obvious disabilities, do not assume limitations on ability based on disability. Do not presume to "understand" the individual’s situation.
Be sure the environment is free of chairs, boxes, displays or other items that obstruct pathways. Offer assistance as needed.
A simple clip board or tray may be helpful if the individual needs to sign in or complete print applications. Electronic alternative format materials may be more accessible for the person to access using the ergonomic workstation and computer.
Once the individual’s mobility and accommodation needs have been determined, simply serve the needs of the consumer reflecting the Mission, Vision, Goals, Values and Principles of DES About DES

Feel free to ask for assistance to reach print materials in our resource areas.
Many of our resources are computer based and we have an ADA workstation. The workstation has a power adjustable desk and ergonomic chair. We can easily move the chair out of the way for you to access the desk with your wheelchair or scooter. Do you use products like Dragon Naturally Speaking or Sticky Keys? Do you need to sign out our headset or do you have your own?
